12/7/2023 0 Comments Onyx cave crystal![]() We will not be back and such poor service reflects on the entire region. Too bad, I was looking forward to the tour, after reading many reviews that appeared to demonstrate that this was the best alternative to the Mammoth Cave tours, of which we had already done a couple and had a fabulous experience, as well as were able to bring our bags and water. Who do these clowns think we are? We'll be doing a chargeback, as their customer service is absolute garbage. But not before seeing a sign that explicitly states that small purses were ok. She proceeds to state, "it's just policy", to which we muster, "what is your policy on refunds" and promptly left. Yet again, no explanation or cause given for such an asinine rule that has now surpassed ludicrous status. I could understand food and soft drink, but water? This cannot be real. This lady informs me that there is no water allowed on the tour. For the record, it's been in the 90s for days here and this tour involves climbing hundreds of stairs. A different lady came over and was cordial for a few moments until she saw me take a sip of my small water bottle I pulled from my back pocket. All in all if you enjoy caves this is not a bad stop but again there is nothing about this place that demands you do so. An adult tour is 10.50 or you can add a half hour of hatchet throwing for an additional 16.00 (26.50) we didnt. At this time, my wife and I had already been debating leaving because of the bad vibes and nasty attitudes. The cave is small not sure how you could spend more than an hour in the cave. Almost an hour later, we are still waiting with just a handful of others. (Of which there are only nasty porta potties.) She said that it would only be 30 minutes. I explained that we purchased tickets for the 3pm slot and asked why the tour was leaving before the scheduled time, as my wife needed to use the restroom. We are now just a few minutes removed from our arrival and this lady then goes and tells a tour group apparently waiting down a flight of stairs (as far as I could tell), to go ahead and that my wife and I could catch the next tour, it still being 6 minutes until the scheduled time. At any rate, all obvious objectionable items were put back in the vehicle. We explained that it is bad practice to leave items in a vehicle, which is ripe for a break-in, even when hidden. She was having none of that, as her rudeness swelled. As someone who has worked in a public facing leadership position for many long years, you never just tell a customer "it's the rules", you explain the premise behind it to help bring about understanding and mutual respect. We asked the universal question, "why", and got the pathetic, "it's the rules", reply. One such item was my wife's purse which is no larger than her hand extended on all sides. She tore into us about what we couldn't bring, a vague laundry list of items. We arrived about 10 minutes before our scheduled time, but apparently the group was ready to go and we were being rushed as the lady came running over to our vehicle almost immediately. There are some beautiful unique spots, and we look forward visiting again.Sure the cave is "spectacular", as many of the reviews and pictures attest to, but I must have come across the same horrible attendants some other reviewers have. Due to the coolness in the cave it wasn't difficult to do the whole tour with our favecovering on. ![]() ![]() Everyone wore masks, and noone seemed to be bothered by this. Go to see the cave, and learn a little cave humor. It is family owned, and the tour guide included each person in our small group. My favorite part about this place was how it was not so busy, and we didnt feel like tourists. (Which also sold disposal masks) The cave tour itself is kid friendly and a very nice thing to do during the really hot days we've been having, it stays about 60☏ in the cave and is not a long trek to get into the cool area. There is a little affordable rock/souvenir shop that reminded me of being her age. They had a decent sized outdoor seating area with little games to pass time while waiting for the tour and a sink with soap to wash your hands with plenty of sanitizer placed around. Luckily for us this spot has yet to be taken over by the huge crowds that we've seen in places like Lost River and Mammoth. My little one loves being outdoors, so we surprised her with a little trip to Crystal Onyx Cave. In depth review: We've been wanting to do a cave tour, but social distancing has been a priority in our life right now. GOOD FOR ALL AGES! Social distance friendly, family owned, affordable. Hope to see them gain some attention, especially with how nice the owners have set up the cave paths. I don't know why this cave isn't more well known in our area, but for the time being I'm happy it was. This is a long winded review, but summed it up in the first paragraph.
